According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), 25 percent of road traffic accidents involve heavy load trucks. Why? Not only does the size and weight of such a vehicle make it more difficult to manoeuvre, but an inadequately secured cargo load could also cause the weight to shift erratically, creating a potentially dangerous imbalance. So what's the solution? All drivers should ensure that their exports are secured to the highest standards, both within the crates and pallets themselves, but also within the vehicle.
Securing Individual Goods
Crates and pallets are undoubtedly the best options for transporting individual goods, but they should always be sealed or strapped for extra protection. For small items, stretch film, secured with a strong vinyl or acrylic adhesive tape, is the ideal solution. We recommend a stretch film with a minimum 8 micron thickness, although film of up to a 25 micron thickness is readily available and can provide extra protection - particularly suitable for sea transportation and other transportation methods that are likely to affect the stability of the goods. For larger goods, polyprop hand strapping is one of the most cost effective options. It works best when used with a strapping sealer which helps to create a stronger, more robust seal.
Securing Crates & Pallets
Adequate load securing is also about ensuring the crates themselves remain steady within the vehicle. Ratchet straps with claw hooks are perfect for holding uniform pallets in place, but what about irregular loads which leave gaps between the crates? Dunnage bags are specifically designed to solve this problem. Available in a range of sizes to fit even the smallest of spaces, these bags can be filled with compressed air, creating additional padding and protection and preventing crates from shifting.
Don't take shortcuts when securing your exports. Shocking figures report that 40 percent of heavy goods vehicles are improperly secured (or not secured at all!), increasing the risk of accidents, injury, and even death. So get ready to strap up and seal down!
