Plastic Pallets are Cheaper than Wooden because they Last Long
Plastic pallets have slowly become the norm in the material handling industry. Most exporters are now turning to plastic pallets for their storage and transportation related activities. There are a lot of benefits of using plastic pallet, and one of them is that they are a lot cheaper than wood pallets in the long run.
Plastic pallets are cheaper than their wooden counterparts if you factor in their life. The first thing to notice here is that their procurement and manufacturing process is different than wood pallets.
Wood pallets on the other hand are hard and difficult to procure. ISPM15 regulations developed by IPCC require wood materials of thickness higher than 6mm to be heat treated, fumigated, and checked before they can be used for commercial purposes. This is to make sure that no bacteria or germs spread through their usage to other countries.
Plastic is also very versatile and flexible to use and can be molded into different shapes and sizes providing for a far greater variety of products.
Plastic pallets are durable in nature. They last 10 times longer than wood pallets, and this reduces the cost over a long period of time.
Wood pallets have a shorter life span. There some reasons behind this such as:
ü Wood pallets are not fire resistant, and so if they do catch fire due to any reason, they are rendered unusable.
ü Wood pallets are not water resistant which can lead to rot and fungus. This will obviously shorten their life span.
ü Wood pallets cannot be recycled which increases their procurement costs and reduces their life cycle. Plastic pallets on the other hand are reusable and can be recycled. This makes them cheaper and more eco-friendly.
Recycle and reuse:
Plastic pallets are re-usable which means you do not need to buy them again and again. You can reuse them. Not only this, plastic pallets can also be recycled. Plastic pallets are manufactured from recycled materials, and because of this they are able to fill in the low cost market ends.
Wood is not a product that can recycled or reused. It deteriorates until it is completely unusable. You need to buy a new one to replace the old one.
Plastic pallets do not allow dust, germs and other bacteria to accumulate. This significantly increases their life span. The surface of wood pallet is soft and porous which absorbs dust, germs, bacteria and other fine particles inside reducing its life.
Space and time:
Nestable pallets and rackable pallets allow you to save floor space that will further reduce your costs on return trips when the pallets are empty.
Other ways to reduce cost:
Another added advantage of using plastic pallets which will help you reduce your cost is that plastic pallets are extremely light and easy to carry. They are around 30-40% lighter than wood pallets. This will reduce your labor cost and the time involved in their movement and loading/unloading.
